While our researchers are experts in various aspects of transportation research, not all researchers have the tools to address equity topics in their research or conduct their work following good equity practices, ranging from data collection and analysis to supporting underrepresented students as research assistants. To help researchers think about and integrate equity into their research, we want to give them the tools to help them to be successful. The first objective of this project is to develop a series of workshops that could expand our researchers' (faculty and advanced graduate students) skill set to better integrate equity into our research. Through the workshops, we expect that participants will develop new skills and abilities necessary to integrate transportation equity into future research projects. The workshops will be specific to transportation, making them more appealing than other general DEI opportunities available to faculty. Building on that, the second objective is to engage current and potential community partners in dialogue to generate a mutual understanding of the experiences and needs of disadvantaged populations in urban and rural areas of the Pacific Northwest and identify high priority mobility issues. This will foster improved collaboration for engaged research and technology transfer projects. Both objectives may also result in greater incorporation of equity into classroom teaching.
